“Look kids: Big Ben, Parliament”
After the trade show in England, I met up with my girlfriend in Germany to visit some old friends and family. Sightseeing in Germany in February isn’t necessarily the chosen time to go, but we got very lucky with the weather and there were obviously no crowds to speak of. While in Germany, we hung out in the UNESCO World Heritage area of the Middle Rhein Valley and the Mosel Valley.
The Mosel is world renowned for the Riesling wine that it produces, and we spent a few days living on a vineyard where my sister had been an exchange student. We got to sample plenty of wine, including some right from the 100 year old wooden barrels that they age in.
After a nine hour train journey, full of crazy Dutch people and snoring Germans, we arrived in the Tirolean capital of Innsbruck. I spent a year skiing and ’studying’ in Innsbruck a few years back, so it was awesome to head back and see some old faces.

The highlight of the trip was skiing St Anton, a vast ski area in western Tirol. The views were stunning, the snow plentiful and the crowds thin. My favorite line, which people told me couldn’t be skiied because of a sketchy entrance, was this steep, knee deep blower, 1000 vertical foot pinch that I named Jess’ Juicer. Anyone catch the NF of the Payette reference? Anyhow, I was the only one that skiied this line and got about 8 runs in before I had had enough.
I am back now, so look for me on the water somewhere near you this year.
