Hey, enjoyed your entry. How things have changed! I was part of the first run of what you refer to as the first four canyons of the Río Santa María back in the late 1970s. Your photos bring back wonderful memories. Our trip was written up in Revista de Geografía Universal, Edición Internacional (noviembre 1980; Año 5 Vol. 10 No. 5) in an article spaning twenty pages featuring the photography of Jaime Migoya Von Bertrab. (I'm the white-helmeted guy in the photos paddling the kevlar-yellow boat.)

Your photos of other locations in the watershed are fabulous dream fodder for a somewhat-less-intrepid-these-days mostly sea-kayaker anymore kind of guy.

I would like to suggest that you paddler types that read this and know the region support conservation of the river and the Sierra Gorda.

Hey Fraser,

I didn't write this post, but I did run a kayaking business down in that area for 5 years or so back in the 90's. Basically, right now is a great time to go. The rainy season is in the fall, when a lot of these rivers are going to be huge, but around mid December, things start to mellow out. January and early February is really your best bet. All of these rivers here are in the Ciudad Vallez area.
