Wow, thats a tough question to answer. He’s an old school kayaker from the east- started paddling in the early 80’s at Riversport in the John Lichter days… everyone who paddled regularly in that area during the 80’s and 90’s has at least one epic Boomer story. I personally have a dozen at least. He’s not to be confused with Eric Boomer, the paddler from Montana/ Idaho area.
Well, what he was doing was not all that adventurous. Camp creek is a class III run, and the problems they had were not related to the difficulty of the river- it just got dark before they could finish, and there was enough downed trees to make paddling even at twilight a risk. To Boomer’s credit, he had a very complete first aid kit with him, that included a space blanket, candle, and lighter. So, I don’t know if that answers your question or not, but maybe sheds a little light on the story..

So with a 13 yr old, …kayaking in the snow… is he mentally and physically fit?
