This is Jim Buley. Most people know him in the Washington DC area as a local, Potomac River, whitewater paddler, which he most certainly is. He also runs Valley Mill Kayak Shop and School. What people don’t know about Jim is his passion for gardening, and most importantly, protecting his crop. Below, Jim brandishes his homemade, groundhog-eliminating tool, which he quickly crafted in a heated moment in order to honorably protect squash, tomatoes, beans, peppers, carrots and corn. He explained to me that he is a lover of nature, but that a farmer has to protect his bountiful crop without exception. An unfortunate groundhog recently “passed” shortly after dining in Jim’s green bean row. The woodchuck’s carcass was unavailable for a photo op.
