As most paddlers know, the West Coast doesn’t have too many river-surf options when it comes to playboating. In fact, most NW paddlers don’t even own a playboat. The year-round creeking is so good out here, that a lot of people don’t even bother with hunting down a good feature, when flows come up. With everything basically flooding out here in Hood River this month, there are some great play features that come in to play, that a few of us out here still like to keep track of.
One of these elusive playspots is the Conestoga Wave on the Deschutes River in OR. This is a wave that comes in for about a week every year, and is one of the best! With one downside being its lack of eddy service. This is a pretty tiring wave to tame. Having to get out of your boat after each ride, and fight the high volume boils to catch, it takes a committed person to want to play at this puppy! Joe Stumpfel, Jason Schroeder and myself decided to make a Saturday out of it this past weekend, and came away with a few nice shots!
