I paddled Mill Creek for the 1st time around the age of 8. It was my 1st creek. About 2 miles over the hill from my parents house in Clarion PA, an outing on Mill Creek comes with many class 2 rapids, a few class 3 rapids, and plenty of family and hometown friends. Beyond the sentimental value and the fun whitewater, this creek is also special because it finishes within 5 minutes of a hot tub!

On what must have been one of my first times down Mill Creek, I was paddling with my Mother in high water and a real rain and lightening shit storm. I was a very young, timid paddler and was quite scared. Actually, I think I was crying and at one point didn’t want to continue down the creek. In a moment of maternal paddling instinct, my Mother got out of her boat, took off her sock, and use it to tie our boats together. She then pulled me down the rest of run. I’m not sure if she would remember this, but I will never forget it. I guess that’s what family is for!!! Thanks, Mom!

This years Moose fest was very similar to every other year. Good parties, good paddling and cold as hell. The water was pretty high this year which was making for good entertainment for us all. After the river demshitz had a cookout at the takeout. We set up our tent and fed and hydrated the cold paddlers getting off the Bottom Moose. It was about as gnarly as weather can get that day. Cold, rain, and lots of wind. I figured there was no use in changing cloths so just stayed in my dry suit all day. Got to love it! After the Moose Fest Nicole and myself headed East to get some Vermont runs in. We teamed up with several other demshitz on our travels and ended up paddling four new runs!! Here is a video from the mini tour……..

The Demshitz team rolled through IR today to put the final touches on what can only be called the most anticipated kayak merchandising site in history. Not ones to disappoint, they pulled all the stops during the photo shoot- or at least felt OK about dressing up Dave like he’s going to a sweater party (pictured). Anyway. If you are ready to take your love of Demshitz to the next level, click over and get yer credit card ready.

After a great Skookumchuck session, a few new Washington creeks, and about 8 days of rain we found ourselves drying out in Hood River OR. Hood River is one of my favorite places in the US. Basically for me this is because of two reason’s. One being the Green Truss section of the White Salmon and two being the amazing Little White Salmon.

Right now I’m in Colorado doing a lot of freestyle kayaking. The month of June is pretty much one play spot to the next. Colorado does have good creeking, however there are at least a dozen man made playparks in the state. These man made features provide easy access and a controlled beginner environment.

So the bonus in Colorado is you can work all day AND after you’re done, gather your gear and head straight to the playpark. You need no shuttle, it’s very safe, and it gives you a great excuse to drink beer at night.

I have found that if you are a playboater a dry deck is definitely the way to go.

Why is this?

1. Well, the main reason I use my dry deck is I love that damn IR green! It’s the shit!

2. It’s super comfortable. There’s no tight skirt around your waist. You don’t think the skirt is a big deal eh??? Well, one ride in my dry deck and you will see. It’s way more comfortable.

3. The dry deck is super dry. There is no skirt and dry top combo… it’s all one unit. So no extra holes for the ice cold waters to enter your boat. Also, my dry top is attached to the driest skirt I have ever had on a Pyranha kayak; the IR Kling On. No shit…. DRY!

4. The last reason is the best… a Immersion Research dry deck will for sure get you the babes!! Just today 3 ladies smiled at me whilst in my kayak gear!!

This is myself doing a wild tricky thing. Just maybe my dry deck is responsible???? Notice the green top……… stoked!

So, my trip to Chile was a huge success. I was there for five quick weeks that included kayaking almost every single day. I got on some of my favorite runs, some new ones, and lots of great waterfalls. I would have to say this was one of the best kayaking trips of have had to date. What made it so succesful was a motivated crew, like I said paddling everyday, and running almost everything in our path with very little problems and no injuries. I wanted to write this recap mainly to thank the good people at Immersion Research for making my trip much much more comfortable. Chile in November can be very cold, and very wet, and I will tell you it was. Not the whole trip, but maybe about half of the five weeks I was there. Knowing that this could be the case before I got on the plane to head south I packed only a IR dry suit and two Union suits. After a paddle session I would get out of my dry suit totally dry, take off my Union suit, put it back into the Dry suit and through it into my gear bag. This kept me dry, not even kidding the entire 5 weeks. This was a big factor in us kayaking everyday. Dry gear is not to hard to put on in the cold rain. This made it easy to motivate the entire trip! Before I sign off here if you did not see our video of the middle Palguin yet check it out. http://vimeo.com/17251084 This is proof that the new Immersion Research Kling (new skirt) is a great fit for the Pyranha Burn. I ran several 50 + foot waterfalls with no implosion issues. Also, staying quite dry. If you have a Burn and are in need of a skirt this is the best fit on the market. Hope yinz have a great winter and see you all on the water in March.

Myself on the very strange Garganta de diablo. When I came to this horizon line I looked over, scratched my head in amazement and went down the midde. What a crazy, cool, fun, drop!

This is a few rapids below the Garganta. The coolest most committing gorge I have ever seen. Love it!!

The IR union suit always classy. Yea I’m not sure what I’m eating, but it was gnar for sure.

As the rain pounded in upstate New York Nicole and myself started driving north. Our first stop was the Inner City Strife wave where we met up with Jeremy Laucks, Bryan Hartman, and a few other of demshitz. Here I was able to test drive my new green dry deck from Immersion Research, which is looking very pimp as you will soon see. After a few days of non stop surfing myself, and Jeremy met up with Matt Young and several others for a run down sections 3 and 4 of the Oswegatchie. This was a Moose like river but on a bigger scale. I believe Jeremy called this style of river “lake and huck”. This sick week of kayaking lead us into the always entertaining Moose Fest. Yes…… there was rain and snow. Here is a video of the Inner City wave and some creeking on the “lake and huck” Oswegatchie.
