Re your Fleece-Lined Guide Shorts: I’m looking for a fleece or fleece lined short to wear under my ski pants for those cold days when they don’t heat the chairs :). I presently have a pair of fleece “skateboarder” shorts that I can’t find anymore in local stores so I’m hoping that your fleece-lined guide shorts will do the trick for me.
Questions: Is the fleece-liner like a brief as in for swimming/surfing or is it a full liner from waistband to leg bottom? Related question in case the first answer is “full liner: Do these have a brief inside as well as the liner?

Thanks for your help in my quest to keep my rear end warm when I’m out thrashing the ski hill.

    Hey Bob,
The fleece liner is sewn completely into the short- the shorts are basically made with two layers of fabric- the outer “shell” and the fleece lining. There is no brief on the inside.
Another option might be to take a pair of our thick skin pants (see mens layering) and cut them into shorts. We can do that work here for a very small fee, The thick skin pants are tight-fitting fleece pants.

I have the IR Guide Neo, they are awesome, and wear these any time the water is cold and the air “warm,”
Why don’t you make these in long pants? they would be great river, and after river pants.
I would really dig the fleece lined.
The “surfer baggie,” style pant might go well?

    Hey John,

For many years we made a long pant that was based on the guide short- it was the same material with a lace up waist, and we made them in unlined and a fleece lined version. Over the years, though the sales on them were pretty low, and finally this year we canceled production on them due to declining interest. We do have some pairs left over from ‘07 in stock if you are interested. You can call us or check the seconds page.

I’ve had problems in the past with sizing - i ended up sizing down 2 whole sizes with the women’s fleece guide short the last two seasons. I want to be a nice girlfriend and get a pair of men’s for my boyfriend. Do we have any feedback on men’s sizing with similar problems, or do they run true to size? He is a 33″ waist.

    Hey Katie,

You have touched on a common problem in today’s pattern making- we are constantly forced to make our garments bigger and bigger to accommodate the ever-increasing waist size of Americans. I could go into detail about women’s sizing, but since the question is regarding men’s shorts, I will stick to that one. We fit our men’s shorts like most popular style jeans right now- the actual measurement is about 1″ bigger than the tag. So a 33″ waist actually measures out to 34″. You can measure his favorite pair of jeans for reference. If they measure out to 34″, get a size 33. We usually make this measurement by measuring the top if the waistband with the jeans closed and laying flat and level on top. So 17″ across the top = 34″. If you need more help- give me a call.

This explains why my shorts are just a little too large! (My fault for not trying them on in the first place.)

Anyway, these shorts are fantastic. They’re warm on the water and cool, even with the liner, on land. I wear them while guiding multi-day sea kayaking trips - that’s right, day after day. They hold up great! I’ve been guiding (whitewater, canoe and sea kayak trips) since 1985 and they’re the best shorts I’ve ever had.

    Hey Jon,
Glad you like them- however, you may want to cut down on all of the activity, and spend a little more time eating/sitting. This will help make the shorts fit better. Try whole sticks of butter for faster results :)

The diet worked (substituted ice cream for butter, though) and the shorts fit great!
