Rec Cockpit fit help

Getting the right skirt fit can be very difficult, given that every boater’s needs are unique. This is complicated by the fact that there are 100’s of different rim designs in the market, with dozens of new designs showing up every year. The best way to size up your rim is NOT to rely on information published by the manufacturer- many times the information is outdated or inaccurate. The best thing to do is to measure your rim yourself- and the most useful measurement is the cockpit circumference. The length and width can be used also, if that’s all you can find. All measurements INCLUDE the rim. For the circumference, measure around the outer edge of the rim- NOT UNDER THE RIM where the bungee or rand rests when the skirt is on. If you don’t have easy access to the boat you are trying to fit- try looking it up on skirtfit.com

A couple of notes:

1) Keep in mind that the most accurate fit measurement is circumference!

2) This is our “suggested” fit- some paddlers may need a tighter or looser fit depending on skill level. Where measurements overlap are places where you can go either size, depending on your needs.

Our “recreational” sized skirts are meant to fit boats with the following dimensions:

  • 110″ to 122″ circumference
  • Minimum of 21″ X 42″ length and width, Maximum of 23″X 47″ length and width

Hello, I have an otter xt, with a 19 x 38 cock pit, and I dont know whether to get an xl or a rec skirt, you’re chart says rec, but according to the sizes it should be an xl….thanks in advance

    Hi Abigail,

The Otter XT has a very unusual cockpit shape- it’s 39″ X 21.5″ (measured from outside of the rim), and very wide up front. It’s also a very popular boat, which caused to us to re-configure the Tortuga to fit that boat for 2008.
If you are interested in getting that skirt, you may want to order it directly from us to make sure that you get the 2008 version.
Let me know if you have any more questions,

    -John

I just bought a tortuga rec skirt to fit my Wilderness systems 140 pungo. This is the skirt listed for this kayak, but I just can not get it to fit the cockpit. Any tricks to it or what can you suggest? The cockpit measures 57″ x 21.5″

    Hi Corey
thanks for the note. for that boat, it actually may be easier to start by putting the skirt on the front of the boat and then working backwards. you may have noticed that the front portion of the skirt’s bungee is encased in a rubber hose so that you can sort of lasso the front of the skirt onto the boat. you can put that part on and then work your way around. it should fit with a little bit of pulling. if it doesn’t even come close (say a foot or more short), you may have the wrong size.

if you have any more difficulties, please let me know

What range of sizes does the adjustable neoprene waistband fit?

  • 6 jbecker // Apr 15, 2010 at 11:08 am

    Hi Daniel,
The waist sizes range from 28″ to 38″. Any larger than 38″ we can modify the straps a bit- just let us know and we will take care of you! -Thanks, Jesse

Hi there. Will this (or any of your other products) fit a Pelican Pursuit 100DLX?? Thank you.

  • 8 John Weld // May 25, 2010 at 4:52 pm

    Hey Jim,

I recall that that boat has a somewhat unusual rim size. Can you do me a huge favor, and give me the length and width of that cockpit- and if possible- the circumference of the rim. All of these measurements would incude the rims itself, so the circumference would be around the very outside of the rim. With those measurements, I can give you an exact answer- and have one ready for all future Pelican Pursuit owners. If nothing else, I can point you in the right direction.
    Thanks,
    -John

    Hi John,

Thanks for the quick response. Pelican Int. lists the width as 22.5″ and the length as 44.5″. I measured the circumference to be 112.5″….

    Hi John,

I made a mistake on the width… it should be 24.5″

    Hello,
Any response on a fit for the Pelican Pursuit??

  • 12 John Weld // Jul 22, 2010 at 8:43 am

    Hey Sean,

The tortuga rec should fit that size rim, but I seem to recall that the pursuit has a very shallow cockpit rim, and it’s very difficult to keep a skirt on it. Do you have a skirt now for that boat? Let me know what you think- I’d like to get that figured out.

    John,
No skirt currently. It’s my first/new boat. I’ve read of some people using paddlers wax. Would this help the skirt to remain on the rim?
